The year 2010 marks the 60th anniversary of the European Convention of Human Rights which enshrined our common values on which we based our cooperation. The Council of Europe has the longest history of all existing European cooperation organisations. It remains one of the most important inter-governmental organisations in Europe and plays a unique role in safeguarding the rights of the individual citizen, promoting democracy, the rule of law and human rights throughout the European continent. The Council of Europe acts on daily basis and through political dialog and action, including legal and judicial area, to transform these values into reality for 800 million people. This year we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova’s membership to the Council of Europe. Today, Democracy and Human Rights are still key factors of progress: they have a strong influence on our wellbeing and are a basic requirement to ensure a sustainable quality of life. They play an essential role in building peace and stability in the continent. We must never compromise on our commitments to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
